Would You Consider Doing This?

Why didn’t I do it sooner? I told myself it was because I was busy, but if I were honest, I would tell you it was because I didn't want to leave my cozy bubble. So what did I do? I started co-leading a small group of amazing young ladies.

The first time I led a small group of teenage girls was 18 years ago. I was so nervous I could hardly stand it. Would they like me? Reject me? Do I have anything to offer? I was determined to be the best youth pastor's wife ever. I don’t know if I ever earned that title, but what I did receive was far more valuable. I learned to mentor.

My life has been changed by the 20 girls I have mentored. Honestly, my life has probably been changed more than theirs. Through these relationships, I have learned how to listen, ask good questions, and accept people's differences

Teenage girls are in a sweet place with Jesus. They ponder the deep questions and aren't afraid to search for answers. Sure they spend 4 hours on snapchat, but they are also super sensitive to God's leading. Oh, how I have missed being around their passion for life and growth.

Your Turn…

Would you ever consider mentoring someone? I know mentoring is a big word. A scary word. If you removed the intimidation factors, you would see that mentoring is just one person walking alongside another, doing life together. And that is what changes lives. God uses mentoring to build a mentor’s confidence and reliance on Him. He also uses it to give the mentee a safe place to process the ups and downs of life.

As mentors, we will never have all the answers, but God does. If we make ourselves available, He will do the rest. Our fears could stop us, but our obedience could propel us. Are you open to letting God propel you into an uncomfortable area, so He can grow you and someone alongside you?
